The best thing about deep sea fishing in Florida is spending the day in one of Florida’s beautiful blue oceans.

Imagine sitting out in the open ocean, enjoying the quiet day that leads up to the big catch. The sun is shining, the line is tugging, and soon there will be a gloriously large fish on the end of the line.

Before we can enjoy deep sea fishing, we need to learn the ropes of deep sea fishing in Florida.

What You Need to Know about Deep Sea Fishing in Florida

For the most part, anyone can go to chartered a boat, listen to the captain, and have a great day.

There are, however, some things we’ll want to know to prepare.

What to Expect

There are several different types of deep sea fishing excursions. Try out an afternoon excursion, a quick four-hour trip, or an overnight charter.

Part of the decision-making process is about time. The other thing to consider is that the longer you go for, the farther out you can travel. Talk to different charter companies and ask lots of questions before making your decision. Keep in mind that experiences will all generally be the same.

Once we get on board the charter, it’s essential to store our gear below deck. Things on deck will get wet quickly, so either waterproof everything or store it below deck.

The captain will make their announcements once everyone is onboard. They go over the itinerary and any safety information that we need to know. After that, it’s time to relax until the fishing begins.

When the boat gets to designated coordinates, the crew will set-up the fishing gear. There are several different types of set-ups out there, so pay close attention to the captain’s instructions. Regardless of any past experiences, the rigs are all different. Listen to the captain, and follow their directions.

5 Safety Tips to Remember

Don’t get me wrong; deep sea fishing is more about fun than safety. The problem is that not being safe while deep sea fishing in Florida can ruin the entire experience. So don’t skip over these valuable tips.

1. Wear Sunscreen

It’s easy to burn out here. The water only makes the sun brighter, so we all need extra protection.

2. Know Where the Safety Gear Is

Out on the open ocean, there’s no knowing what could happen. In case of an emergency, it’s imperative to know what to do.

3. Drink Lots of Water

Sure, fishing goes better with fun drinks and cocktails. However, those drinks don’t hydrate the body well. While soaking up all the sun, make sure you stay hydrated.

4. Never Grab a Fishing Line Once a Fish Has Been Hooked

Without heavy-duty protective gloves, I’ve seen the line slice right through human flesh.

5. Ask the Crew for Help on Your Big Catch

Don’t let a big catch get away out of fear of asking for help. When we’re first starting out, we all need a hand. This doesn’t mean the catch isn’t yours; it just ensures that the catch doesn’t get away.

What to Wear

I admit clothing isn’t the first thing we think of when deep sea fishing. However, clothing is an essential step in preparation.

Being out in the sun all day requires light clothing that can keep us cool. Think t-shirt and some shorts. A windbreaker or rain jacket for the sea sprays is also a good idea. Don’t be afraid to show off a bit of your personal style. After all, this is supposed to be a good time. Show off that ocean love, and wear something that sports one of the beautiful Florida fishes.

Whatever happens, don’t forget polarized sunglasses. Being able to see is a big help when deep sea fishing.

Fish You Might Catch

The exciting part of deep-sea fishing in Florida is all the incredible fish there are to catch. That is, after all, the entire point. The warm tropical waters attract a wide variety of fish, making Florida the perfect place for fishing. Our waters are brimming with the best catches.

There’s the beautiful sailfish. These are remarkable fish that have giant blue sail-like fins on their backs and sharp sword-like noses. Catch one of these guys, and you’ll be able to pose for the iconic fishermen’s photo.

If you’re taking a short trip and staying closer to shore, the spotted trout is quite the treat. They grow large and travel in schools, so we’ll have a better chance of catching one of these guys.

Of course, the largemouth bass is world renowned, and Florida is the favorite spot to catch one. People come from all over just to mount one of these beautiful fish.

Whatever fish you catch, it’s going to be a treat. That’s because the best part of deep sea fishing is the meal you have at the end of the day.

Enjoy The Open Sea

Now that we know everything there is to know for prepping it’s time to get started. Call some charters, get the gear together, and enjoy the open ocean.
